I’d been wanting to work on a character based on another person’s design. I asked concept artist Lesly Oh to borrow a design, and she gave me permission to make a model of this character illustration. My main goal was to adapt it accurately while bringing it into a more realistic style.
After taking some time to research hair card techniques, I wanted to work on the hair/face part first and figure out my strategy for modeling the rest. Johan Lithvall’s hair tips were especially helpful.
I’ve made facial rigs with blend shapes before, but I always had a problem where extra meshes like eyelashes or brows wouldn’t follow the main mesh. To fix that, I found this rivet script which pins a locator to the mesh and follows any deformations. Then, I parented a joint to those locators and binded my meshes to it. It works great! No more re-sculpting blendshapes!
